Embedded C++ Software Engineer - Laser Optics - Max £40K - Manchester
Salary: £25,000 - £40,000 plus bonus & benefits
Location: Manchester Science Park, Manchester
This is a small team based in Manchester that is part of a larger worldwide company. The wider group covers all areas of air quality and emissions monitoring and the team in Manchester is specifically developing Laser gas analysis hardware. They now require a software engineer with experience in Embedded C++ to develop and maintain the code for current and future gas analysers.
This is somewhere you can make a difference: Producing equipment that monitors the quality of the air we breathe, making sure it's safe to do so! A noble cause indeed!
The experience required for this role is as follows:
A relevant degree
At least three years of commercial experience in Embedded C++ code development
An excellent understanding of Embedded software development
Strong abilities in mathematics
Knowledge of ADC and DAC
Knowledge of at least one serial protocol such as RS485, I2C and SPI
This is the development and maintenance of Embedded C++ code for the existing and future Laser gas analyser products, HOWEVER they said that if all you want to do is stare at code on a screen, then this isn't right for you! They want someone who is excited about this kind of technology and how it can be used in the world.
This is the chance to work in a multi-disciplinary environment because at the same time, colleagues are working on electronics, optics, lasers and signal processing so this goes beyond solely software: You need some understanding of the hardware, of how the measurements are made, etc. Therefore, there are a variety of problems and challenges here.
This is somewhere you can make a difference: Is the air we breathe safe? You program the equipment that tells us! This is an exciting area; there is a great future in improving air quality.
Specifically in this software engineering role you are able to innovate and bring in new signal processing methods that will go directly into the products, improving the products.
As for career path, you would take full responsibility for the firmware. You would be completely in charge of the software, the upkeep, the development, the innovation:
They can become THE number one person for Laser gas analyser firmware in the entire group.
With the parent company being global and headquartered in Paris, there are opportunities for travel. It's a small team, so your contribution is proportionately large. They have a nice office in the Manchester Science Park, a very vibrant area with nice facilities: on-site cafe, gym, personal trainer, showers, secure bike store and outdoor workspace.
The hiring manager commented: It's like being in California, but without the weather!
