Artistic Research Fellow in Filmmaking

A position as Artistic Research Fellow in Filmmaking (Ph.d.-level) is available at the Centre for Excellence in Film and Interactive Media Arts (CEFIMA) at The Norwegian Film School (NFS). 

 

The NFS approach to filmmaking is centred on narrative storytelling and developing the artistic potential of the individual filmmaker. Artistic Researchers are expected to work on audio-visual projects within film, immersive or interactive media that are both innovative artistic works as well as being relevant to the NFS core curriculum. We particularly encourage projects that push boundaries of audio-visual narrative storytelling using new thechnologies and platforms.

 

The artistic work must adhere to the standards and guidelines set out by the Artistic Research Fellowship Programme (see “Guidelines for Applicants and Applications” for more information).vPlease note the Norwegian Film School has a different deadline for this position than the Fellowship Programnme announces on its web site. 

 

Successful candidates will approach the work from the perspective of combining the strengths of traditional cinematic storytelling with the transformative potential of the new digital/interactive tools available to filmmakers today. The output of an Artistic Research Fellowship / PhD in Artistic Research is expected to be a / a series of artistic works in the field of high international quality, combined with a critical reflection on intentions, process, and outcome. There is no requirement for academic publishing or a thesis and traditional academic writing is discouraged at NFS.

 

The chosen candidate will be employed by the Norwegian Film School / Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences; this employment is contingent upon the candidate’s project being accepted by a review committee of international experts in the appropriate field. The position is for 3 years and the Candidate is expected to be based at the Norwegian Film School in Lillehammer and to contribute to the development of the school programmes.

 

In addition to the artistic research and associated critical reflection, there are mandatory workshops and gatherings organised through the Fellowship Programme. There is also a requirement to teaching in relevant fields at NFS, and to participate in NFS pedagogical training programmes.

 

Qualifications and personal skills

 

The ideal candidate will be a practising filmmaker, screenwriter, or digital media storyteller with professional experience in film, television, games, and/or digital/interactive storytelling. Experience with narrative storytelling in film, television, or new media is an asset.

 

It will be important to the Norwegian Film School and to the experts whom the school consults to assess the applications that it is possible to obtain a good impression of the applicant's artistic qualifications for carrying out the project. It will therefore be decisive that emphasis is placed on good documentation of these qualifications through the presentation of previous artistic activity and other relevant material. 

 

Applications must either document recognised competence at assistant professor level in the artistic field in question through a confirmed transcript of an expert opinion, or alternatively, documentation material must be enclosed that can form the basis for carrying out such an assessment in connection with the assessment of other aspects of the application. Such documentation will have many similarities with that required in the section above. Completion of a Master of Fine Arts programme in a relevant field will also count as such documentation.

 

Documentation can include letters of reference, acceptance letters from festivals, competitions and the like, IMDB-listings, features/reviews from mass media, and the like. It is important that all relevant experience and artistic works are properly documented.

 

Additional qualifications
The candidate will spend a great deal of time working independently, and must demonstrate excellent organisational abilities. In addition, the candidate must possess both oral and written presentation skills, and good interpersonal skills.
