Head of Production, Arts, Science, Religion (Glasgow)

Context
BBC Production is moving to a One Network TV Production model. This represents a significant change in the way in-house production operates– moving from a base and divisional view of the business where different parts of the BBC compete, to the creation of a joined up pan UK genre model with creativity at its heart. The Heads of Production UK within each genre will play a key role in delivering the pan-UK strategy.

BBC Television has the 3 newly created genre groups:
• Knowledge & Daytime*
• Comedy & Entertainment
• Drama, Films & Acquisitions

Within Knowledge & Daytime we are currently recruiting a Head of Production (Arts, Religion and Science) which will have base responsibilities for Glasgow and Salford.

There is a dual reporting role to both the Controller of Business and the Head of Production UK (Factual).  And will work closely with the Head of Production (NHU, Factual and Docs) who has base responsibilities for Bristol, Cardiff and Northern Ireland.

Role
The role will be responsible for leading the strategic and business planning of the pan-UK Production business alongside the relevant Genre Head. You will deliver the pan-UK Production Management strategy that supports the day to management of productions but also the longer-term objectives for growth and efficiency. This will include shaping and planning production activity, securing key rights and talent, managing financial and operational risk and driving business levels.

As Head of Production UK you will work closely with the Head of Funding & Commercial to identify commercial opportunities and exploit the lifetime value of your content. You will also be responsible for planning and managing pan-UK production budgets within the genre, which includes responsibility for the strategic allocation of funding and the delivery of efficiencies through new and innovative ways of working.

Post holders at this level are expected to maintain a wide range of internal contacts across the pan-UK business, including Divisional Directors and Senior Managers across the BBC. Alongside this you will manage the performance of production areas through ensuring adequate training, and development and performance management arrangements.

You will be a key member of the senior management team responsible for developing and implementing the genre strategy across the BBC.

Requirements
You will have extensive experience of production and production management across a broad range of output, and ideally have experience in your preferred genre.

You will have substantial knowledge of end-to-end multi-platform production with a level of technical understanding, excellent business and finance skills, and extensive knowledge of commissioning and green light.

The successful candidate will also have experience of leading large and diverse teams across a broad range of output and locations, alongside proven experience of leading change and continuous improvement programs.

You will have a good understanding of the competitive challenges of your genre and a track record in delivering business growth.

To build a collaborative team that meets the needs of stakeholders and the audience, you’ll possess strong leadership, organisation and advanced influencing skills.
