BEV seeks outstanding individual to join the leadership team, directing and producing our internationally renowned film festivals and year round programmes to inspire, educate and offer brokerage for women filmmakers.
BIRDS EYE VIEW: THE HISTORY
Birds Eye View www.birds-eye-view.co.uk began in 2002 as a short film event, and by 2005 had established itself as an international film festival celebrating the achievements of women filmmakers. Since then the Festival has grown in audience from 2,000 to 12,000 each year, taking place across 8 days in International Women’s Week in March, in London, across several venues: BFI Southbank, ICA, Picturehouse Cinemas, BAFTA, Prince Charles Cinema. The festival has premiered important, high profile films including Lena Dunham’s Tiny Furniture, Drew Barrymore’s Whip It and Lucy Walker’s Countdown to Zero and welcomed the likes of Mary Harron and Susanne Bier for director masterclasses, whilst also showcasing the work of women filmmakers from developing countries. The programme is broad enough to have featured cross-platform and internet-based work, silent films with specially commissioned live scores, fashion films, and short films made by emerging filmmakers from all around the world. Birds Eye View has consistently attracted wide national press coverage across media and enjoyed the involvement of VIPs and celebrities from Jerry Hall to Zoe Wanamaker.
Birds Eye View has also run three innovative training Labs for emerging female screenwriters: Last Laugh: Women Create Comedy in partnership with Warp X (2008-09), Re:Animate - forming alliances between writers and animators in partnership with Warp Films (2010), and She Writes: focusing on feature screenplay development in partnership with The Script Factory (2010-11).
BIRDS EYE VIEW: THE FUTURE
After seven increasingly successful festivals, in 2012 Birds Eye View ran a trio of events rather than the regular festival. This was due to the radical shifts in the funding landscape during the preceding year. This has provided us with an opportunity to pause, undergo a consultation survey with stakeholders, and work with an experienced consultant to agree a three year strategic plan which sees the organisation delivering more and achieving a higher impact in service of women filmmakers worldwide.
The key, relevant components of the new draft strategy include:
• re-launching the international film festival as a major biennial event in 2014
• radically improving the year round offer through events and online editorial
• producing special themed festival events for the ‘off-years’, modelled by BEV’s celebration of Arab women filmmakers to be held at BFI Southbank in Spring 2013
• increased global partnerships and activity
• ensuring that BEV delivers inspiration, education and brokerage for women filmmakers in all activity
This is an exciting moment for Birds Eye View, and a hugely rewarding and challenging opportunity for the right candidate. It is a chance to build on the phenomenal success of Birds Eye View to date, leading the Festival into another decade of celebration, artistic excellence, national and international profile and continued audience development, whilst radically increasing BEV’s offer for filmmakers.
Co-founder Rachel Millward was the Festival Director from 2005 to 2011, and is Exec- Producing the 2013 festival of Arab women filmmakers whilst a freelance team produce and programme it. She will remain with the organisation working part-time as Chief Executive, focusing on talent development and cross arts commissioning, and working on strategic organisational development in collaboration with the Creative Director.
The Board of Directors is currently welcoming new members from the film industry, so far including Briony Hanson, Head of Film at the British Council, Anna Higgs, Head of Digital, Film 4.0 and Sandra Hebron, ex Artistic Director of the London Film Festival (Advisory).
You must be absolutely passionate about film and the contribution of women filmmakers, with a keen desire to be an outstanding cultural leader. You must have exceptional and entrepreneurial drive and commitment and a strong personal network within the film industry. You must have an uncompromising attitude to artistic quality, a confident and dynamic creative vision, a clear sense of how to attract an audience, a passion for serving international women filmmakers, and the ability to think and act strategically at all times.You will be an accomplished communicator and willing to engage in high level debate on behalf of women filmmakers worldwide. You must have experience of delivering excellence on a shoestring, and be tireless in your pursuit of growth.
The new Creative Director’s Job Description will be as follows:
• Direct and Produce the 2014 Birds Eye View Film Festival, and biennial Film Festivals from 2016 onwards, including: -Artistic Direction: Overseeing all festival programming, taking an active role in securing major titles and selecting themes, strands, special events
-Involving VIP and industry contributors - guest speakers, juries etc
-Developing and managing venue partnerships
-Developing distributor and sales agent relationships
-Fundraising and management of funder relations
-Establishing a delegates system or equivalent and designing an industry
programme which serves the wider community of women filmmakers
-Ensuring all festival events offer education, inspiration and brokerage to the
wider community of women filmmakers
-Overseeing press and marketing campaigns, working with external design and PR agencies and internal freelance marketing managers
-Recruiting and managing the festival team including festival production manager, marketing managers, programming support, interns and possibly freelance fundraisers
• Deliver BEV’s new communications strategy including overseeing design & editorial of our newly improved website and social media, establishing Birds Eye View as a thought leader in the international campaign for women filmmakers
• Design and deliver annual events for women filmmakers to engage on relevant issues
• Design and oversee other year round activity, including talks and screenings, developing and managing partnerships with UK organisations
• Oversee themed festival events in the interim years
• Develop, monitor and regularly improve BEV’s strategic offer for filmmakers
• Undertake national and international networking for effective partnerships for BEV
• Work with the CEO and the board, assess BEV’s strategic planning and work to improve our offer for and impact on behalf of international women filmmakers, keeping all activity firmly on mission and working towards BEV’s overarching vision.
